Style Profile: Stephanie

I had the great opportunity to correspond with Stephanie Maida; an NYU student, VICE intern, and overall stylish chick. She expresses herself with words and her clothing speaks for itself (in the best way possible). She's an inspiration as she juggles a lot but also has a great time!

How did you start interning at Vice? What do you do there? What have you learned?
I started interning at Vice in January, after sending them a really love-struck cover letter (I've been a huge fan/avid reader of Vice for years). I'm a web editorial intern, so I do lots of website editing on the CMS in addition to normal duties like fact checking, transcribing, and researching potential sources. Since I'm also a writer, I do pitch stories and I've been able to write a few articles myself, most recently a show review of The Shins. Since it's my first internship and experience working in the editorial offices of a major publication, I've really learned everything. Like, I had never transcribed anything before and the first time I did, it took me 8 hours to transcribe a 45 minute interview...thankfully I've gotten a bit quicker with that. But I've also learned to be prepared for anything and to appreciate constructive criticism.

You have a blogspot, luxe rubbish, what inspired you to be a blogger?
I've been blogging for around 10 years (woah, that sounds so weird to say!) but I started on Xanga in Junior High. It was just a fun way to record my daily non-adventures and an outlet for my creative writing. I started my blogspot right before I went to study abroad in London..it was meant to be a fashion blog, but then it turned into a place to dump my fun photos, talk about my life, and write show reviews. One of the bands I wrote about even found the blog post and thanked me for writing about them! That was cool.

How do you juggle being a student at NYU with your internship and daily life?
Ah, the juggle is a pretty delicate one. I'm a double major in English and Journalism, so I always have a ton of reading and writing to do for school in addition to my personal writing and whatever I need to do for VICE. I also NEED to go out and have fun with my friends at least twice a week or else I'd have an anxiety attack and not be able to get any work done, haha. My "work hard, play hard" does seem to work pretty well though, plus I get my best inspiration from wandering around the city at night, people watching, and having my own crazy experiences. I really thinking living is a major factor of any art form, whether it be writing, painting, singing--whatever. Your own experiences shape your work and make it unique and sitting in your bedroom is probably not going to provide you with any new experiences.
